CAREFULLY CRAFTED CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES AND ACTIVITIES
Each non fiction close reading comprehension passage falls within the Lexile level of 380-580, which is perfect for your readers who are ready for the challenge of close reading! These are not meant to be independent work unless your readers are VERY strong. Most 1st grade students will need teacher guidance and support to work through the activities because they require a lot of DIGGING DEEP!
The Lexile level is marked at the top of each passage. The topics range between STEM topics, science, history, and opinion pieces. The formats include website simulations, magazine articles, and texts with multiple diagrams.
WHAT STANDARDS ARE THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES ALIGNED TO?
These non fiction reading comprehension activities are most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 1st grade classroom. There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version where the passages and activities make references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both sets of passages and activities, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.

These nonfiction close reading passages and activities are perfect for teaching reading comprehension skills, reading assessments, guided reading groups, or reading comprehension homework. If you have purchased my 2nd Grade Common Core Close Reading Passages and Activities, please note that nearly 70% of reading passages are the same. They have only been modified for less text complexity and to better match the 1st grade reading comprehension standards. However, you will see that the questions and tasks on each of these products are completely different and completely aligned to the grade level reading comprehension standards.

NOTE ABOUT DIFFERENTIATION: Please note that unlike the other grade levels in this product line, this set of 1st grade reading passages and activities DOES NOT INCLUDE DIFFERENTIATED PASSAGES. As this product is meant for 1st graders who have already mastered decoding in accordance to the Science of Reading, and are ready for close reading and deeper comprehension tasks, simplifying the texts would not appropriate for this grade level.
