Description

These are the fiction reading comprehension passages and activities that every 5th grade teacher is looking for! This pack of BESTSELLING reading passages has 50 original 5th grade fiction close reading passages and activities that will get to the heart of improving reading comprehension by teaching your students to become close reading experts!

There are eight fiction reading comprehension target skills in this product. Each reading comprehension target skill has a set of 5 fiction reading passages and activities specifically dedicated to it (…except for the fiction compare and contrast target skill because it has a total of 10 reading passages so that your students can compare away!)

Each one of the 50 fiction reading passages has 2 pages of carefully written close reading tasks and reading comprehension activities. The first page of reading comprehension tasks is specifically aligned to the fiction learning target identified at the top of the page. The second page of reading comprehension tasks is a SPIRAL REVIEW of all the fiction reading comprehension learning targets for the grade level. This is perfect for holding those kids accountable for all of the fiction reading comprehension skills they have already learned! No skill slipping on your watch!

CAREFULLY CRAFTED CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES AND ACTIVITIES

Each fiction close reading comprehension passage falls within the Lexile level of 770-980, which is the standard expectation for 4th-5th grade. The Lexile level is marked at the top of each passage. The reading passages are sorted in order from least complex passages to most complex passages so you can guide your students as needed. There are a variety of text types including narratives, biographies, and letters. In terms of interest level, EVERY reading passage is written with a 5th grader in mind.

WHAT STANDARDS ARE THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES ALIGNED TO?

These fiction reading comprehension activities are most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 5th grade classroom. There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version where the passages and activities make references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both sets of passages and activities, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.

WHAT CAN THESE FICTION CLOSE READING PASSAGES BE USED FOR?

These fiction close reading passages and activities are perfect for teaching reading comprehension skills, reading assessments, guided reading groups, or reading comprehension homework. Your students must refer to the text and provide textual evidence of their understanding and comprehension of the reading passages.

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID…

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This product is worth money. She has so many different stories and lessons to go with the stories. It gives me a way to get started without having to go and hunt similar stories and then have the kids get working! Thanks so much!” – Kathy B.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “ These resources, literary and informational, may just be the best thing I’ve ever purchased from TPT!! =)” – Ashley W.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “ I cannot have enough praise for these! Without a doubt, the best and most-utilized sets I’ve bought on TpT are this pack and the informational pack. Absolutely fabulous!!!” – Brandy P.

NOTE:

The Common Core standards consider 4th and 5th grade level texts within the same Lexile level band of L770-980. That means I use many (about 70%) of the same texts in both the 4th and 5th grade products. I only modify the passages slightly for text complexity and to better match the specific grade level standards. However, you will see that the questions and tasks on each of these grade level products are completely different and aligned to that grade level’s standards. If a 5th grade teacher is looking for something to differentiate for lower level readers, I suggest my 3rd grade pack.
