FORTY-FIVE original 3rd grade leveled reading passages and close reading activities perfectly aligned to Common Core! Standards RL.3.1 – RL.3.7 each have FIVE passages and activities specifically dedicated to that standard. Standard RL.3.9 is extra special (you know, the one where you compare two versions of the same story) because it has a total of TEN passages so that your students can compare away!
This is a perfect companion to use with my related Informational reading pack:

3rd Grade Close Reading **Add-On Extension Pack** Literature
RIGOROUS AND COMMON CORE ALIGNED
Each passage has TWO pages of carefully written and consistent close reading tasks and text dependent questions. The first page of tasks are specifically aligned to the standard identified at the top of the page. The second page of activities is a spiral of all the 3rd Grade RL standards. This is perfect for holding those kids accountable for everything they have already learned! No skill slipping on your watch!
WHAT CAN THIS BE USED FOR?
This is perfect for class-wide close reading, assessments, guided reading groups, or homework. Your students must refer to the text and provide textual evidence of their understanding.
CAREFULLY CRAFTED READING PASSAGES
Each passage falls within the Lexile level of 450-790, which is the Common Core Standards expectation for 3rd grade. The Lexile level is marked at the top of each passage. The passages are sorted in order from least complex texts to most complex texts so you can guide your students as needed. There are a variety of text types including poetry, narratives, and plays. In terms of interest level, EVERY passage is written with a 3rd grader in mind.
The Common Core standards consider 2nd and 3rd grade level texts within the same Lexile level band of 450-790. That means I use many (about 85%) of the same texts in both the 2nd and 3rd grade products. I only modify the passages slightly for text complexity and to better match the specific grade level standards. However, you will see that the questions and tasks on each of these grade level products are completely different and aligned to that grade level’s standards. If a 3rd grade teacher is looking for something to differentiate for lower level readers, I suggest my 3rd Grade extension packs – Informational DIFFERENTIATION PACK, Literature DIFFERENTIATION PACK.
