CAREFULLY CRAFTED CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES AND ACTIVITIES
Each close reading comprehension passage falls within the Lexile level of 450-790, which is the standard expectation for 2nd-3rd grade. The Lexile level is marked at the top of each passage. The informational text types range between STEM topics, science, history, and opinion pieces. The formats include website simulations, magazine articles, and texts with multiple diagrams. In terms of interest level, EVERY passage is written with a 2nd grader in mind.
WHAT STANDARDS ARE THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITIES ALIGNED TO?
This product is most closely aligned to the Common Core standards. However, everything is referenced as “learning targets” so that it is applicable within any 2nd grade classroom. There are two options in this download. You can choose to either use a version where the passages and activities make references to Common Core or a version that does NOT make references to Common Core. The content is the same in both sets of passages and activities, but this option gives Common Core schools a specific reference to the corresponding standard, which may be helpful.
WHAT CAN THESE CLOSE READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES BE USED FOR?
These close reading comprehension passages and activities are perfect for teaching reading comprehension skills, reading assessments, guided reading groups, or reading comprehension homework. Your students must refer to the text and provide textual evidence of their understanding and comprehension of the passages.

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID…
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I used these with second grade students as well as above average 1st grade readers. I integrated these into guided reading lessons once a week. The passages were engaging and it was easy to match target skills specific to the weekly comprehension skill. The students really enjoyed discussing and searching for evidence within the text. Using specific colored crayons helped with engagement also.” Melinda H.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “These bundles have a been a staple of mine for at least the last 7 or so years. Anytime I change grades, I immediately download this knowingly life will be much easier. Students find the color coding engaging and I love that there are multiple levels for each skill and how clearly labeled they are.” – A is for Abbott
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I am extremely impressed with the level of interest in these passages, and the questions that go along with each passage. They align to specific standards, and the resource is organized to quickly find the standards that I needed to focus on for my students.” – Susan Wagner

NOTE:
The Common Core standards consider 2nd and 3rd grade level texts within the same Lexile level band of 450-790. That means I use many (about 85%) of the same texts in both the 2nd and 3rd grade reading passages. I only modify the reading passages slightly for text complexity and to better match the specific grade level standards. However, you will see that the questions and activities on each of these grade level products are completely different and aligned to that grade level’s standards. If a 2nd grade teacher is looking for something to differentiate for higher level readers, I suggest my 4th Grade Close Reading packs. If you are looking to differentiate for lower level readers, you don’t need to buy the 1st Grade pack, you can save money and use the 2nd Grade add-on differentiation packs – Informational DIFFERENTIATION PACK, Literature DIFFERENTIATION PACK.
